What's the best microphone?

Our lighting and sound courses can be found here!

In this episode we discuss why there is no such thing as the best microphone and, instead, how to choose a microphone that will work well for YOU.

Some of my favorite learning YouTube channels for sound recording and post production:

Podcastage — some great beginner tutorials and lots of microphone reviews

SoundSpeeds — Great into from a video production boom operator

Dan Worrall — more advanced audio mixing tutorials (mostly music, but also often applicable to dialogue and spoken word)

Production Expert — Look for the post production tutorial on this excellent channel

If you’d like to learn how to make great dialogue audio for your film and video projects, please have a look at my courses including processing dialogue audio in Adobe Audition and DaVinci Resolve/Fairlight, recording sound, how to use the Zoom F4, F6, F8, and F8n, and how to get the most from the Sound Devices MixPre series of recorders. Our latest courses cover Sound for Live Streaming with the ATEM Mini and an Intro to Izotope RX.

Gear used or mentioned in this episode:

- SHURE SM58 microphone (this is a microphone purchase that pretty much nobody regrets)

- Focusrite Scarlett 2i2 USB audio interface (Gen 4)

- MOTU M2 USB audio interface (I personally prefer this, but audio quality is pretty much the same on the Focusrite)

- Canare microphone cable

- Foam cover for SHURE SM58 microphone

- Neumann U87 Ai condenser microphone (if you’re getting started, you DO NOT need this)

- Rupert Neve Design Shelford Channel (if you’re just getting started, you definitely DO NOT need this)
