Sound Shark Parabolic Dish Microphone - Capture Distant Sound

In today’s episode, we put together some audio samples of sound recorded with the Sound Shark parabolic microphone. A parabolic microphone usually consists of a lavalier microphone suspended in the focal point of a parabolic dish. Let’s have a look and a listen to see how well it can capture sound from a distance.

If you’d like to learn how to make great dialogue audio for your film and video projects, please have a look at my courses including processing dialogue audio in Adobe Audition and DaVinci Resolve/Fairlight, recording sound, how to use the Zoom F4, F8, and F8n, and how to get the most from the Sound Devices MixPre series of recorders.

RODE Announces the New VideoMic NTG Camera-top Shotgun Microphone

RODE just announced their newest member of the VideoMic series of microphones with the VideoMic NTG. This is a fairly substantial step forward for the series for a few reasons from my perspective:

  • Can be removed from shockmount, mounted on camera, or on a boom pole

  • USB microphone

  • TRRS cable auto detects and configures itself to the device to which it is connected

  • Uses the new annular tube design of the NTG5

The mic also carries forward many of the features of the VideoMic Pro+ such as safety track recording and auto on/off.

Some might say, “Hmm, looks a lot like a DEITY D3 Pro plus a USB mic feature…,” and I agree. Looking forward to getting my hands on this to see how well it compares to the D3 Pro. You can place a pre-order over at B&H Photo.

Zoom F6 Audio Recorder Review

In today’s episode, we give you some audio samples from the new RODE NTG5 shotgun microphone and Zoom F6 recorder while we talk about the bebob micro cinema batteries. The headline feature of these batteries is that they are tiny relative to other cinema style batteries. They come in V-mount/V-lock or Anton Bauer Gold Mount. While they aren’t the cheapest cine batteries out there, they appear to be top quality and have some unique features like twist d-tap outputs, USB outputs, and an in-built flash light. But what is more interesting is that once the batteries have been used and their ability to hold a charge degrades, you can send them back to bebob and for about 1/2 the price of the original battery, they will put new cells in the battery. If you drop your battery and one of the physical parts break, they can be replaced.

CORRECTION: In the video I noted that you cannot record at 192kHz in 32-bit float mode. Actually, you can, but must disable the LR stereo mix, turn off all limiters, and turn off AutoMix.
