Sound for Video Session: Headphones for Recording & Production Sound

In this week's live Sound for Video Session, we looked at four sets of closed back, over-ear headphones from Sony, Senal, Sennheiser, and Beyerdynamic for recording sound for video and film.

If you’d like to learn how to make great dialogue audio for your film and video projects, please have a look at my courses including processing dialogue audio in Adobe Audition and DaVinci Resolve/Fairlight, recording sound, how to use the Zoom F4, F8, and F8n, and how to get the most from the Sound Devices MixPre I & II series of recorders.

Gear discussed and used to record this episode:

Sony MDR-7506 Headphones - one of the most common headphones used by production sound mixers and boom operators - B&H

Senal SMH-1000 - very similar to the Sony but more even voicing and interchangeable cables - B&H

Sennheiser HD280 Pro - My pick for most neutral sound/voicing and comfort - B&H

Beyerdynamic DT770 Pro 80 ohm - very comfortable and generally even sounding but bulky and bit more expensive than the others. More common in music studios - Amazon

Sound Devices MixPre II Series recorders - B&H

Panasonic GH5s - B&H

Panasonic 12-35mm f/2.8 OIS lens - B&H
