Mobile Audio Interface and Mixer — iRig Pro Quattro I/O review

In this week’s episode, we take a look at the iRig Pro Quattro I/O from IK Multimedia. This compact audio interface and mixer has two XLR combo mic/instrument inputs and two XLR combo mic/line-in inputs equipped with phantom power, two 3.5mm RCA line-in inputs, two balanced XLR outputs, direct monitoring for the headphone output, and several recording modes and functions. This multifunctional device can be used for streaming, podcasting, and other applications of dialogue recording. In this video we walk through the Quattro’s feature set and compare it to similar sound recorders like the Zoom H8 and CEntrance Portcaster. Let’s take a closer look!

Clean Dialogue in Acoustica — Rotate Phase for Loudness and Extract:Dialogue for Noise Reduction

In this week’s episode we start our multi-part series on Acoustica, a digital audio editor made by Acon Digital. Besides being a lower-cost alternative to iZotope RX, Acoustica is an interface for all your ‘audio editing, podcast creation, mastering, and audio restoration’ needs. With such features as spectral editing and retouch, multi-channel support up to Dolby Atmos 7.1.2, and ARA 2 integration capabilities, Acoustica is a compelling editor to add to your workflow. In this series, we walk through and test Acoustica’s Premium Edition feature set and compare it to industry standard suite iZotope RX 9.

In this installment of the series, we try out Acoustica’s Extract:Dialogue and Rotate Phase functions. First we’ll show you how to rotate phase on a recording in order to reclaim headroom during the loudness normalization process. Then, we test out the Extract:Dialogue plugin and compare its results to those from RX’s Dialogue Isolate. Let’s take a closer look!

Zoom’s self-described ‘new flagship field recorder’ has 8 inputs and 3 outputs, 10-track recording, dual A/D converters, professional-grade preamps, Automix, and, of course, 32-bit float wide dynamic range recording capability. This new edition of the F8 recorder can also be used as an 8-in/4-out audio interface and can be controlled with the F8 Control App for both iOS and Android. Sound for Video Session: XLR Audio Cables & Q&A

In this week's Sound for Video Session, we talk a bit about XLR audio cables. First we cover some of the basics on using XLR cables. Also, one of the questions I've been asked many, many, many times is, "Do those expensive Mogami or Canare cables really sound better?" I've also been told, "You're wasting your money on expensive cables, they don't sound any better..." After that, we answer your sound for video questions.

I'd recommend you have custom cables made with Mogami or Canare cabling and Neutrik connectors. I get mine at performanceaudio.com. But many local pro audio shops should be able to supply cables for you.
