Sound for Video Session: MixPre Mix-Minus & Q&A
In this week's session, we cover how to set up a mix-minus on a Sound Devices MixPre and then answer your questions. What is a mix-minus? It is just a way to setup your recorder so that you can record a remote guest or host as well as yourself and others with your recorder. In this case, we show how to do this with the MixPre-3 from Sound Devices, assuming the remote guest will be dialed in via Skype on your computer or tablet.

RODE NT-USB Mini Microphone Review
In today’s episode we have a closer look at the RODE NT-USB Mini microphone. This affordable USB microphone records high quality sound for podcasts, livestreams, voice over, and even for vocals for music. The microphone is simple to use, works with Mac, PC, and tablets, and is probably my favorite USB microphone in the $100 price range.

Live Sound for Video Session: Accentize VoiceGate & Q&A
Hello Soundies! In this week's Sound for Video Session we demonstrated a new dialogue de-noise plugin which evidently uses neural networks to more effectively separate voice from noise. We ran a few different audio clips through the plugin to show where it excels and where it is not quite as effective. You can find out more about the VoiceGate plugin at https://www.accentize.com. Full disclosure - Accentize gave me a free license to demonstrate this plugin. I do not earn any money from purchases of VoiceGate.

Senal SCI-3212 Budget Boom Microphone for Film and Video Dialogue
In today’s episode we have a look at and a listen to a budget indoor boom microphone, the Senal SCI-3212. This small boom microphone comes with 3 different capsules with different polar patterns. We’ll focus on the super-cardioid capsule which is commonly used for video and film dialogue indoors. For less than $100 USD, this is an impressive option for those of us on a tight budget.

Dante Digital Network Audio and Switch Back M8RX Demo
Today’s episode is an explanation and demonstration of Dante digital network audio and the Switch Back M8RX preamp/headphone mixer. What is Dante and why do you care? Dante can help solve several problems such as long audio cable runs and how to capture large numbers of audio channels in a single production. Even if you don’t have a need for it now, let’s show you how it works so you are aware and can solve these types of problems if you do find yourself running a larger production some day.
The hear Technologies Switch Back M8RX is a small, 4 input preamp (2 XLR mic/line inputs plus a 3.5mm line input) plus a 4 channel Dante headphone mixer. The preamps are very high quality, with Burr Brown converters and very little THD. This is one of the more affordable ways to get into Dante network audio and solves several potential problems for location and production sound mixing. It can also be very useful in dialogue replacement and foley studio recording. This is one of those devices that might make you might scratch your head at first, but once you get it, you quickly see its value.
You can learn more about Dante at the Audinate website.
